How this table was built

Every row comes from USDA FoodData Central, sr_legacy, the same U.S. government nutrient database that supplies every food figure across MedMenu's kidney content. Portion sizes are USDA's own household measures for each food, a medium banana, a 3-ounce cooked chicken breast, a half cup of cooked beans, rather than a generic 100-gram serving, so a number here matches what actually lands on a plate. Each row links to a USDA FoodData Central search for that food so you can check the underlying source data yourself.

160 foods in this table. Nothing here is hand-typed or estimated; it is pulled directly from the audited data file behind MedMenu's kidney content.

Potassium and phosphorus limits are individual

This table is a reference, not a personal limit. Many renal diets work around 2,000 mg of potassium and 1,000 mg of phosphorus a day as common reference points, and most adults with kidney disease are advised to stay under 2,300 mg of sodium a day, but none of these are a diagnosis or a prescription. How much of each mineral is right for you depends on your CKD stage and your blood test results, and only your nephrologist or renal dietitian can set that number for you.

What the colors mean

Each mineral column is color-coded low, medium or high per serving, so you can scan the table without doing the arithmetic yourself. Potassium and phosphorus follow the American Kidney Fund's Kidney Kitchen food guides; sodium's low cutoff is the FDA's own "low sodium" labeling threshold and its high cutoff is the National Kidney Foundation's own patient guidance. Two different named authorities for two different minerals, stated as such rather than blended into one invented scale.

Potassium

Low ≤150mg · Medium 151-250mg · High ≥251mg

Phosphorus

Low ≤100mg · Medium 101-199mg · High ≥200mg

Sodium

Low ≤140mg · Medium 141-239mg · High ≥240mg

Common questions

How were the portions in this table chosen?

Each portion is USDA's own household measure for that food, such as a medium banana or a 3-ounce cooked chicken breast, not a generic 100-gram serving. That keeps the numbers close to what actually lands on a plate.

Is this table medical advice?

No. It is a reference table of nutrient data. How much potassium, phosphorus or sodium is right for you depends on your CKD stage and blood test results, which only your nephrologist or renal dietitian can set.

What do the Low, Medium and High colors mean?

They classify each per-serving number, not the food overall. Potassium and phosphorus bands follow the American Kidney Fund's Kidney Kitchen food guides (potassium: low 150mg or less, medium 151-250mg, high 251mg or more; phosphorus: low 100mg or less, medium 101-199mg, high 200mg or more). Sodium's low/medium boundary is the FDA's own "low sodium" labeling threshold (140mg or less, 21 CFR 101.61); its high boundary follows the National Kidney Foundation's own cutoff for a food that is "not a good choice" on a kidney diet (240mg or more). These are common patient-education reference points, not a personal limit set by your care team.

Can I cite or embed this data elsewhere?
