The cup is the USDA reference portion, useful for comparison but smaller than a normal serving. A wedge, the size a cookout usually cuts, is nearly double a cup and still lands under a banana on both minerals.
By the raw score, yes. Watermelon carries a glycemic index of 76, above a ripe banana's 51 and an orange's 43, close to the ceiling most GI tables use. Used alone, that number would flag watermelon as a food to limit closely with diabetes.
The glycemic LOAD tells a different story. Load multiplies the GI score by the actual carbohydrate in a real portion, and a cup of watermelon carries only 11 g of carbohydrate, because roughly 91% of its weight is water. The math (76 × 11 ÷ 100) puts a cup's load at about 8, inside the range most glycemic-load scales call "low" (Atkinson, Foster-Powell and Brand-Miller, 2008).
Pairing a serving with protein or fat, the way you would with any fruit, slows the rise further.
Most people with kidney disease have no fluid restriction at all. Where one exists, it is mainly for advanced CKD or people on dialysis, and the daily allowance is a number your care team sets from your labs, not a fixed rule everyone shares.
What is true regardless of stage: watermelon is around 91% water by weight, a higher share than most solid foods carry. If you are one of the people managing a fluid allowance, that is worth raising with your renal dietitian directly. Practices differ on whether and how high-water fruit gets counted, so this is a conversation for your specific plan rather than a number this page can give you.
